History

Men from the area met in 1940 to examine the prospect of building an airport in the Adirondacks. A plateau a few miles from Saranac Lake Village that is big enough for an airport has been found. The Paul Smith's Electric Company's properties had the ideal location. The Town of Harrietstown built a terminal structure and a 30-meter-long (100-foot) hangar in 1950. On July 10, 1949, Adirondack Regional Airport was formally dedicated to serving the Adirondacks' residents.

The area was then served by Colonial Airlines and Resort Airlines, two commercial airlines. One of the best Class III airports in the nation was said to have been built at this airport.
