History

Springfield's Capital Airport was named the best principal airport in the state by the Illinois Department of Transportation for 2020. The airport is making significant preparations to ensure that electric-powered aircraft can use its facilities. In order to handle more traffic in a wider range of wind conditions, the airport started building a new crosswind runway in 2021. Construction on a solar energy farm was started at the airport in 2022.

Military use

Capital Airport Air National Guard Station is located at the airport and occupies 91 acres of property that is leased from the Springfield Airport Authority (SAA). The 183d Fighter Wing, a unit of the Illinois Air National Guard operationally acquired by the Air Combat Command (ACC) and State Headquarters, Illinois Air National Guard, is based there. The 183 FW, historically a fighter unit, has 321 full-time and 800 part-time military members.

The airport has 2,300 acres and an average of 73 aircraft operations per day. 66% are general aviation, 18% are military, 15% are air taxis, and 1% are airlines.
